Important Sparrow Update - Reyes Has Left the Building

Even though it's still LIC week, I had to interrupt it to bring you the latest news about Sparrow and its chef Reyes who I love very much. Reyes is the mastermind behind Sparrow's delicious eats including their phenomenal burgers, sandwiches and of course the decadent pain perdu. So it was with great dismay that I learned yesterday that not only was Reyes leaving Sparrow, last night was his last hoorah. He was gracious and wrote to me personally to break the news. I was shocked and sad but wish him all the best and much success in the future.

With that said, Dan and I went over there to pay our respects to the man, the legend, the burger genius. He was expecting me and came out of the kitchen to say hi. We conversed and I thanked him for all that he does. His future plans are still unknown but he said that he wants to "explore more, learn more and to move forward." I have no doubt that he'll succeed and can't wait for the day when he tells me where we can find him next. Mark my words, I will follow this man wherever he ends up--and Dan is right there with me.

And although we already had dinner, we saved room for a Reyes dessert. Chocolate mousse was the special treat last night and not only was it presented beautifully, with Reyes' careful touch but it tasted oh so luxurious. I kid you not when I say that we finished it in less than a minute--destroying this generous piece and licking the plate clean (see picture for proof). The best part of the mousse cake was the cinnamon-liquor embellishment on the side--it was fun to dip the cake into it and the liquor gave it an unexpected kick. You can always count on Reyes to deliver something special and make the ordinary unique.

It was a bittersweet goodbye last night but I'm glad that we saw this culinary genius off. Good luck Reyes--Astoria will miss you!

Where will he go next? I promise to let you know...

Island Has Closed - But Not For Good

I discovered some trouble in paradise on my way to Spa Hydra. As I passed the infamous Euro hangout, Island, I noticed a letter taped on its door. Immediately, I became intrigued. Can something be wrong? Lo and behold there was something very wrong--the letter said that due to a conflict with the landlords, Island is now closed. I can't say that I'm sorry to hear it. While the atmosphere was incredible, the clientele and the food was anything but. Island claims that it will reopen soon and encourages patrons to keep their hopes up but I'm not convinced. I know...I know...how completely biased but I can't root for a place that serves overpriced drinks and less than mediocre tasting food. Que sera, sera.

Thai Angel is now Zabb Thai

THEN
NOW
Zabb Thai - 34-11 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103
718.726.7029
N/W Train to 30th Avenue
www.zabbthai.com

It's only been a couple of months since Astoria's staple Thai eatery, Thai Angel has changed management and is now called Zabb Thai. My colleague Floozigrl from Joey in Astoria and I walked by the other day and were astonished by how quickly this place reopened. It looks a lot trendier and welcoming than Thai Angel--not to knock the old place but it was starting to look a bit stale.

I grabbed a menu and am happy to report that the prices are inexpensive and the selection is definitely extensive. Here's a quick sampling of the menu. As is my custom, email me if you'd like to see the entire menu at critic@foodistanyc.com or check out their website.

Appetizers:

Fresh Roll - Fresh roll with bean sprouts, cucumber, scallion, carrot & egg...$5

Crispy Golden Fish - Fried fish with sweet chili sauce...$4

BBQ Beef - BBQ beef served with Zabb's spicy sauce...$8

Curry: Costs range between $8.50-$13.95 depending on whether you get veggies, chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, squid, scallops, a seafood combo or duck.

Pineapple Curry - Red curry with coconut milk, tomato, pineapple and basil

Panang Curry - Curry paste with coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves

Jungle Curry - Curry paste with bamboo shoots, eggplant and basil

Fish: Fillet fish...$12, Whole fish...$18

Pla Sram Rod - Deep fried fish with mango, cashew nuts & Zabb's special chili sauce

Pla Ka Prow- Deep fried fish with garlic, chili and basil sauce

They also have lunch specials, Monday-Friday 12p-3p for $7-$8.

Give Zabb a try, especially on a nice day. They have the entire front window open so while you won't exactly be sitting on the sidewalk, you'll still get the atmosphere of 30th Ave and of course feel the pleasant spring breeze.

Lava Cafe Will Open in Less than a Month

On my way to Salon Tiara, I noticed some activity at Lava Cafe--a fire engine red window facade and people setting up all sorts of things inside. I stopped to chat up one of the workers and he informed me that Lava will open in less than a month. I'll continue to keep my eyes peeled, as I'm certainly psyched to welcome this new cafe to our neck of the woods.

Pinocchio is on Hiatus

My 30th Avenue Bureau Chief, Kimberly has informed me that our beloved Pinocchio Palace is undergoing some needed renovations. Exciting news but also a bit sad, considering that they will remain closed until May 9th. We're looking forward to a new and improved Pinocchio but in the meantime wait impatiently until we can sink our teeth into their delicious brick oven pizza and killer gyros.

Philippu - Coming Soon!

On my way to Vue Cafe, I spotted a new restaurant that will open soon. The place is called Philippu and it will serve Philippino food. I thought this was a neat concept especially because it's a rarity in Astoria with all the Greek and Italian eateries. Rumor has it that Philippu will be a BYOB joint. Stay tuned for more information about its official opening.

Philippu is located on the corner of 21st Street and 31st Avenue.

Akti Update - The Curtains Have Lifted

Earlier this week, I told you about a new Greek restaurant--Akti--that's scheduled to open. I walked by again yesterday and the window covering has been lifted, exposing the work-in-progress dining room. I was able to stop and chat with one of the employees working on the space. Asking him when Akti will open, he replied "probably next Friday afternoon." Another interesting tid-bit I found out is that Akti is owned by the same people as Table 30, its across-the-street neighbor. More news to follow--I'm looking forward to trying it.

Akti - When Will It Open?

I don't know about you, but I'm definitely among the curious Astorians who walk by this place weekly. And every week, I ask myself "when is this place going to open?" I tried calling the number on the sign but no one answers. If anyone knows the inside scoop about Akti and when they plan opening, shoot over a comment. What I know to date is that they'll serve authentic Greek cuisine for lunch and dinner. I spied a "help wanted" sign in the window about 3 weeks ago but it's now gone. I can just smell an opening! Stay tuned...

Precious Water - Astorians Join the Tap Project!

Thousands of restaurants around the country are joining the Tap Project--a campaign that recognizes and appreciates clean and available tap water in our communities and at the same time helps UNICEF distribute clean water to children around the globe.

How the Tap Project Works:
All participating restaurants encourage their patrons to donate a $1 for their drinking water during their visit. Yes, that water is normally free but by giving a $1, you'll help provide clean water to those who need it most.

I was excited to see that Astoria's restaurants stepped up to support the cause. Visit these eateries between Sunday, March 16th and Saturday, March 22nd, give $1 for your water and help needy communities around the world.

Participating Restaurants in Astoria:

Ovelia Psistaria - Fun place for traditional and modern Greek cuisine--and a great brunch option. 34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.721.7217

Sanford's Restaurant - Astoria's landmark diner--has been in the 'hood for over 75 years!
30-13 Broadway, Astoria NY 11106. 718.932.9569

Chocolate Spoon Coffee House - A new cafe/bakery in Astoria--known for serving drinks in amazingly oversized mugs. 37-03 31st Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103. 718.204.0780

JJ's Asian Fusion - A neighbor of the Chocolate Spoon, you'll find tasty sushi and other eclectic Asian grub. 37-05 31st Avenue, Astoria NY 11103. 718.626.8888

Locale - Trendy cafe/bar, serving Italian dinner specialties and various brunch options. 33-02 34th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106. 718.729.9080

Support this cause and enjoy Astoria's delicious cuisine along the way.

All Day Brunch--Euro Style!

Euro Delights - 32-02 Broadway Astoria, NY 11106
718.777.2270
N/W Train to Broadway

I used to frequent Euro Delights a lot when I lived in that part of the 'hood. For those of you who haven't tried it yet, their crepes are superb. Walking by the other day, I saw that they serve brunch food all day long! How great is that? Pop in for a delicious and inexpensive crepe (both sweet and savory--your choice), an omelette, french toast or pancakes. Their sandwiches and wraps are yummy too!

Here's a sampling of their menu--and some great prices that won't hurt your wallet.

Omelettes: $6.25 (include various toppings)

Wraps: $5.95 - $6.95 (the higher priced wraps include shrimp) All wraps are served with a side salad or fries.

Pancakes or French Toast: Start at $3.25 and you get three pieces per serving.

Crepes: $3.95 - $9.95. These include both sweet and savory. My favorite is the Marie Antoinette with Nutella, bananas, strawberries and a sweet liquor. I've only tried their dessert crepes but that's just my thing--put anything in front of me with Nutella and I'm happy.

Enjoy it and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What Ever Happened to Breakfast?

Terrizzi Pasticceria – 35-14 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103
718.726.9698
N/W Train to 30th Avenue

Many of us look forward to a weekend, treating ourselves to a nice brunch. But what about breakfast? We often skip it, saving our calories and our dough for a bigger meal. But before you miss this important course again, take a look at a mouthwatering breakfast special from Terrizzi Pasticceria:

The Tuscan Breakfast Special: Available everyday (and on the weekends until 3p)
Two eggs on a roll with pancetta, provolone and a cappuccino - $5.75

Now that sounds like a treat to me and I plan on trying it very soon. Terrizzi has been a staple of the ‘hood for more than 40 years. So give this local pasticceria a try and tell ‘em who sent ya.

I Love Fatty's But They Misled Us

You might remember me (and Joey in Astoria) mentioning a Fatty's V-Day drink special last week--all in good fun and to celebrate singlehood.

I wanted to report back to you that Dan and I went there last Thursday--excited to drink our booties off--but no cigar. Not only was there no "party", there were absolutely no drink specials. I'd like to mention that the Fatty's employee I spoke with said "fun shots and drink specials start at 10p"--but there was no such thing. Pretty disappointing to report about a place that I love and respect so much.

Dan and I ended up staying and drinking their regular priced drinks and playing gin. We had a good time--of course--but couldn't help feeling deflated about Fatty's Fat Fib. Not cool.

I can only speak for myself, but I presume that the let-down is shared by others.

Make it up to us Fatty's--the 'hood wants a raincheck!
