Balu - Miami or Astoria?

Balu - 37-11 30th Avenue, Astoria NY 11103
718.626.2258
N/W Train to 30th Avenue

Margot suggested trying Balu this week, the newly opened Med cafe on 30th Avenue. I've seen it under construction but didn't know that it finally opened. We checked it out on Tuesday and while the atmosphere impressed us, the food was nothing to brag about.

Atmosphere:
The first thing that popped into my head when seeing Balu was Miami. Everything was white, drapy and soft looking--it had that summery/tropical feel that I love. Even the staff wore white from head to toe.

There's a large outdoor seating area, which is covered by a big, (you guessed it)...white canopy or you can choose to sit inside. To the right, you'll notice a wall with moving water backed by a fish tank computer screen. Margot and I loved the water effect but what was up with the fish tank? Tacky, tacky.

The back of the room features a semi-private large table, which looks fabulous for throwing parties. There are also two identical smokestacks that strangely reminded me of the ones at Ovelia. Coincidence? I think not! While the overall effect was cool, it just seemed like Balu was trying way too hard to be trendy.

Food:
The menu at Balu revealed the usual Med cafe suspects--sandwiches, salads, pita, dips, pizza, specialty drinks and coffee. Margot and I were starving so we both ordered personal pizzas. They sounded great on the menu but in the end we were disappointed all around.

Tomato, Basil, Mozzarella Pizza - This was Margot's choice and it came out quickly. While it looked good and was piping hot, the taste wasn't anything special. Actually it tasted processed, like a frozen pizza. That's not to say that the dough wasn't good--that was actually my favorite part--it was just far from spectacular. Because we were both super hungry and because they messed up my order, we ate this pizza quickly.

Blue Cheese, Spinach Pizza - I thought that this sounded interesting and because I don't often eat blue cheese, I was really looking forward to it. To my surprise, what I received was an exact replica of Margot's pizza (tomato, basil, mozzarella). There was no trace of spinach or blue cheese so I spoke up and sent it back. It reappeared in about 10 minutes with what looked like the same pizza with spinach hastily plopped down on it and still no blue cheese in sight. Needless to say, I was disappointed and especially at the waiter's response of "sorry, we left this pizza in the oven by mistake." What a lie! It was clearly the same pizza as before with just a couple of quick "fixes," which were worse mistakes. I didn't appreciate the trickery and would've much rather preferred honesty.

Service and Cost:
As mentioned above, I wasn't at all wild about the service. They were dishonest, disorganized and inconsistent--we got a different waiter just five minutes after the first one took our order. The staff seemed frazzled and unsure of themselves--could be because Balu is so new but this needs to improve. Pronto!

The prices are low. Our pizzas cost $8 each and we even got drinks ($7-$8 each). Not bad. Sandwiches will cost you in the neighborhood of $7-10 and the same goes for burgers. You won't be dishing out the big bucks here because it's simply not worth it.

Mano's Papaya - When Will it Open?

I've been monitoring Mano's for a couple of months now, first writing about it on Joey in Astoria. And now I'm really starting to wonder when it'll actually open. Will it actually open?

A lot of you might know that the original location on the corner of 30th and Steinway has been converted into a Bank of America. It saddened me along with a lot of other people, I'm sure. The new location is on the corner of 30th Avenue and 30th Street, near 7-Eleven and Trade Fair--and now the new burger joint, Petey's Burger.

If anyone knows the scoop about Mano's and when it'll officially open please give me a shout.

Petey's Burger - Coming to Town

I passed by Sai Organics yesterday and saw that a new burger joint called Petey's Burger will open next door. What a contrast--organic food v. burgers/Americana!

There aren't too many details to report yet except that their logo and design is funky, contemporary and seems to differentiate itself from the Burger Kings and the Mickey-D's. Their tagline is playful yet informative - "A Fresh Touch on an Old Favorite." You can currently sign up for their mailing list on www.peteysburger.com but that's about it for the website--it's not up and running yet.

I'll keep an eye out and let you know when Petey's opens--it's facade has definitely piqued my interest.

Walking back from Sunday's belly-dancing class, I noticed a shiny new restaurant facade across the street from New York Sports Clubs. That gleaming facade belonged to an Astorian Thai staple, Thai Pavilion. This restaurant has been around for more than fifteen years but I've always passed right by it. Its new sign, while a little flashy definitely grabs your attention. It certainly made me pick up a menu and marvel at its extensiveness and delicious-sounding specialties.

Below is a sampling of their cuisine. If you haven't done so already, check it out and keep Pavilion in your consideration set along with other Thai options such as Wave Thai, Thai Elephant and Leng Thai. And like most Thai establishments, this one won't hurt your wallet.

Bar 36 - $16 Brunch with Unlimited Cocktails

Bar 36 - 36-05 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103
718.715.4420
N/W Train to 30th Avenue

There are many weekend brunch specials on 30th Avenue but only one offers unlimited morning cocktails--Bar 36. This modern and not yet a year old bar and eatery offers a spectacular setting both indoors and outside. The inside is incredibly sleek with a simple black, white and gray motif and smooth wooden, asymmetrical paneling on the walls. You'll also find funky plant arrangements and a bathroom so stylish that it's worth a trip to the loo. The back of Bar 36 leads to an archway and when passing through it, you'll find yourself in a private outdoor garden, which is both intimate and charming.

I've tried their food before and while I wasn't overly impressed, I want to give Bar 36 another chance, as I sampled their cuisine just a couple of weeks after opening. Mistakes have a way of correcting themselves after some time and I've heard good things from other Astorians, which makes me hopeful.

So...when I saw that Bar 36 is offering a $16 brunch with unlimited cocktails, I was sold. I'll be checking it out soon and reporting back about the quality of food. I peeked over at a two-some enjoying their brunch and it looked pretty damn good.

Below is a sampling of their brunch menu:

Pinocchio is on Hiatus

My 30th Avenue Bureau Chief, Kimberly has informed me that our beloved Pinocchio Palace is undergoing some needed renovations. Exciting news but also a bit sad, considering that they will remain closed until May 9th. We're looking forward to a new and improved Pinocchio but in the meantime wait impatiently until we can sink our teeth into their delicious brick oven pizza and killer gyros.

Vibe Cafe and Lounge - Another Newbie on 30th Ave

Vibe Cafe and Lounge - 40-11 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103
718.932.1212
N/W Train to 30th Avenue or R/V/G Trains to Steinway

Another cafe on 30th Ave? It's true that while Vibe isn't a unique concept--a Greek indoor/outdoor cafe--it's still a welcome spot on the Eastern side of 30th Avenue (past Steinway). Outdoor seating is located both in front and back of the house. The front seating puts you in the midst of the action on 30th Ave and the back garden seating is more private and guarded. I haven't seen this place too crowded yet, which is nice. You can count on Vibe for a laid-back Sunday afternoon coffee or a light sandwich with a friend.

The heat turns up on Fridays though, as Vibe presents Greek Nights with DJ Stamatis spinning "the best of Greek and today's hottest music." Check out this Mediterranean eatery and be prepared to shake it!

A sampling of the menu includes:

Appetizers:

Tiropita - Feta, manouri, graviera, wrapped in phyllo dough...$4

Grilled Octopus - Tender octopus served with roasted red peppers, onions, capers and red wine olive oil dressing...$9.50

Ktipiti - Traditional Greek feta spread...$4.50

Sandwiches:

Vibe Veggie - Grilled eggplant, arugula, red peppers, tomato, hummus...$9.50

Lountza Halloumi - Smoked loin of pork, halloumi...$8

Greek Toast - Tomato, kasseri (Greek cheese), ham...$6

Coffee:

Fredo Cappuccino...$3.75

Black Forest Delight - American coffee with cherry and chocolate...$5

Orange Truffle Mocha - With OJ, chocolate ice cream and milk...$5
